Spyderco PITS 2

The PITS 2, designed in collaboration with British knifemaker Mike Read, takes the non-locking folder concept to the next level with its innovative spring arm mechanism. The two integral spring arms, machined into the handle scales, flex as the blade is opened, applying pressure to the notched-joint mechanism to lock the blade in place against the stop pin. This unique, secure mechanism is paired with a full-flat-ground satin-finished blade made from Böhler-Uddeholm’s M398 stainless steel, known for its impressive edge retention. The matte-finished 6AL-4V titanium handle scales add a classy finish.

    Interesting

I got this because I'm interested in modern slip joints and this is a very innovative take on that concept. It definitely checks that box for me. Personally though, it's not that big of a departure from the original PITS model, and I like the blade shape on the original a little better. Also having the spring arm on the top of the handle added some safety as your hand gripping the knife helps keep it open with out locking. Unfortunately, the original falls into the discontinued collectible category. Fortunately for me....I own one of those too! ;-)

Spyderco PITS 2 – A Premium Slipjoint That Surprised Me

Posted by Petr Dvořáček on 22nd May 2025

I’ve only had the Spyderco PITS 2 for a few weeks now, but it’s already made a big impression. I was really excited to try it out — not only because it’s a new release, but also because I’ve been curious about high-end slipjoints for a while. This one absolutely delivered. Fit & Finish Right out of the box, the build quality is flawless. The machined titanium handle feels solid and premium, but not heavy. The skeletonized design is clever — it’s functional, offers great grip, and looks unique. You can tell this was made in Spyderco’s Taichung factory: clean lines, precise tolerances, and a refined feel all around. Slipjoint Action This is my first knife with integral spring arms, and I was surprised by how strong and secure the action feels. There’s no blade play when open, and the half-stop adds a level of control when closing. Even though it’s a non-locking knife, it feels very trustworthy during use. Blade Performance The M398 steel is new to me, but so far it’s impressive. After regular EDC tasks like opening boxes, cutting food, zip ties, and paper, the edge is still razor-sharp. The drop point shape with a full flat grind makes it a great slicer. For a relatively short blade (2.74"), it handles more than I expected. Daily Carry Feel The knife is light, low-profile, and carries deep with the wire clip. It’s comfortable in pocket and doesn't draw attention when I take it out. That’s a big plus for me, especially in urban or work environments where more aggressive knives raise eyebrows. Overall Impression After just a few weeks, I can say this: the PITS 2 is one of the best slipjoints I’ve ever handled. It combines thoughtful design, premium materials, and everyday practicality in a way that’s rare. If you’re looking for a high-end non-locking knife — whether for travel, legality, or just appreciation of great engineering — the PITS 2 is worth it. I’m still putting it through its paces, but so far, it’s been a fantastic addition to my collection.
