Spyderco Byrd Magpie
The Magpie is the newest member of Spyderco's popular Byrd family—designed for everyday carry users, budget-conscious enthusiasts, and those who appreciate tradition paired with enhanced materials and distinctive style. This folder features a 3.28-inch 9Cr18MoV stainless steel blade at 0.110 inches thick with a full flat grind and black oxide coating, offering more carbon and chromium than its predecessor for enhanced edge retention and corrosion resistance. At 7.60 inches overall and 3.5 ounces, the Magpie balances genuine cutting capability with true portability—available in PlainEdge or partially serrated CombinationEdge formats depending on your cutting preferences.
Based on the legendary Harrier 2—the current expression of the original Harrier and progenitor of all Byrd knives—the Magpie's most distinctive feature is its handle design. Black peel-ply-textured G-10 scales combine with sinuous inlays of white G-10, creating an attractive color-contrasting pattern symbolic of the knife's namesake magpie. Minimalist nested stainless steel liners with a stainless steel backspacer form the foundation of the sturdy back lock mechanism, while the fully configurable four-position clip enables flexible carry positioning. The black-coated clip and hardware complete the refined aesthetic. This is tradition meeting enhanced materials—proof that serious capability and attractive design work together naturally in thoughtful execution.
