The new Kick-Stop version of the infamous 229 Redencion is here and WOW does it have a clean look.

Chaves Ultramar folders are heavy-duty cutting tools with great ergonomics and stylish, straight-forward designs. Manufactured by Reate Knives, the Chaves Ultramar series offers Ramon's custom designs to a wider audience at a great price.

Lee Williams implemented his Kickstop opening mechanism on this knife. While it looks like a standard flipper tab, the setup is quite unique. The tab itself is not a part of the blade tang, and is instead attached to the frame by a separate pin. This means that when the blade is closed the tab sticks out from the spine in the normal place, but after the knife opens, it rotates on its pin to conceal itself within the handle leaving a sleek, classy look. Its a true aesthetics game changer.

As with all current Chaves models, if the Skull clip is not your thing, this knife also comes with a plain, simple titanium clip as well.

    Chaves 229 Redencion Kickstop

Posted by Idaho on 28th May 2023

What can I say about this knife that hasn’t been said? After a few weeks of ownership I have to say this is in my top 5 of my most favorite knives I’ve owned. Here are some things to note when buying this knife; This knife has a free spinning pivot, it doesn't come with loctite on any of the screws. These are the only gripes I have with this beauty. It is INCREDIBLY robust and simple, SCARY sharp out of the box, super comfortable in the hand, the flipper tab is perfect, an amazing knife overall. Here are some things I’ve learned dealing with this knife; I’ve found no aftermarket bearings that will fit with this knife. From what I can deduce that is due to the difference in dimensions regarding thickness of bearings from the regular flipper 229 to the Kickstop version. I believe this to be due to the Kickstop mechanism riding on phosphor bronze washers changing what bearings are used in the Kickstop version. Taco Bearings do not fit. I don’t believe skiffs will either but I’ve yet to get my hands on them. My knife’s pivot in particular I’ve found can be tuned to be IMO significantly more free, smooth, snappy and drop shutty compared to out of the box. When doing this after you loctite the screws on either side of the pivot (if you choose to do that) make TINY TINY adjustments with your torx screws on either side. It’s tough to get perfectly as there’s so much going on comparatively, but when you get that tension perfectly between the Handles, Kickstop mechanism and bearings it is night and day how much better this pivot can get and you will know instantly. When happy let the loctite dry and cure for a few hours and shouldn’t have to worry about the screws backing out from flipping or fidgeting your Chaves. Out of 100 I’d give this knife a 85 out of 100.

    Chaves Rendencion 229 kickstop

Love this one. The Rendencion still has all of the sharp corners, but I dig it. THERE'S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THEM THAT MAKES YOU OVERLOOK THE SMALL DETAILS THAT YOU DON'T LIKE. Reate did an excellent job in the manufacturing and the kickstop Flipper just adds a little something more to an already great knife.
